Aquaman Is Biggest DC Movie Ever At Worldwide Box Office
Swimming with the fishes isn't a bad thing for Warner Bros.' Aquaman box office.
Over the weekend, thanks to Aquaman’s China box office haul, it became the largest grossing DC movie ever worldwide, surpassing Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Dark Knight Rises.
The DC Universe box office is partitioned. There are DC movies made prior to Man of Steel, such as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and the Tim Burton-begun Batman franchise, and then there are the DC Extended Universe movies, beginning with Man of Steel in 2013. This separation is largely in part because DC comic book movies before Man of Steel were standalone comic book movies, meaning they did not incorporate multiple characters from different comic books into individual films, or universe.
In 2019, we will get another standalone DC Universe movie, Joker, but otherwise, there isn’t a standalone comic book movie on the horizon — Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020 is the next big DC Extended Universe release.
Aquaman Box Office Overtakes Every DC Movie
Aquaman’s box office, though, has beaten both standalone DC Universe movies and every film in the Extended DC Universe with its worldwide box office haul of $1,090.8 billion. In second place now is Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice with $873 million and Wonder Woman in third with $821 million for DC Extended Universe movies at the box office and The Dark Knight Rises with 1,084.9 for standalone DC comic book movies. Domestically, Aquaman still has a great deal of work to do if it’s going to beat Wonder Woman ($412 million), the number one DC Extended Universe box office holder and first placer The Dark Knight with $533.3 million.
Currently, Aquaman has made over $316 million at the domestic box office, and it’s still in the top three weekend earners. But another $100 million before The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part takes over on February 8 or even Captain Marvel on March 8, that’s going to be very tough (technically impossible). But it still gets to hold the biggest DC movie worldwide box office title until Wonder Woman 1984 likely knocks it down a notch or any of the other planned DC movies hitting theaters in 2020.
There is still one country left on Aquaman’s release schedule: Japan. That means the Aquaman worldwide box office is going to rise even more.
