A world of peace and love and prosperity. Sounds like a dream. As with any dream, you have to wake up – and the inhabitants of Terra must do just that in order to save their home from being destroyed by humans. Battle for Terra does not attack the human sensibility, as it presents people who are both for and against the war; even if it does give more time to the ones for it but well, there has to be an enemy. What Battle for Terra does show you is how compromise, communication, and understanding can help overcome any disagreement or conflict. Battle for Terra gives hope that a peaceful existence is possible if only given the opportunity; and that just may start with befriending someone who is different from you, your world, or your customs.
As the opening credits begin in Battle for Terra, you are bombarded with magnificent computer-generated animation. The bright colors of space exude off the screen while shadows and light are played with continuously. It is so incredibly real and lifelike you almost forget you are watching an animated film, and not actual cinematography. It is a magical sight to behold. The detail continues as we are introduced to the inhabitants of Terra. Best noted by the fluidity of motion and the inclusion of the reflection of light in the eye, and its subsequent movement as the character moves. The wonderful imagining and creativity of those on Terra are only later shadowed by the incredibly disappointing rendering of the humans. They are stiff, unnatural and they lack any sort of originality. What could have been an incredible piece of animated wonderment is brought down by the lack of energy put into a very large part of Battle for Terra’s story.
