In case a remake of The Evil Dead is not enough, audiences can look forward to Wither, a Swedish film from Artsplotation Films that is being touted as a full-fledged homage to Sam Raimi’s seminal 1981 splatterfest. The plot sounds familiar; a group of kids trot off to a rural cabin and unwittingly unleash a demon that they trap in the basement. Curious horror fans can check Wither out and see if it lives up to the hype when it’s released on DVD on August 20th, complete with an illustrated eight page booklet, deleted scenes and a behind-the-scenes featurette.
Artsploitation is an American distribution company that is gathering up the rights to plenty of cool international horror films. Available now are a pair of July releases, Combat Girls from Germany and Vanishing Waves from Lithuania, and the company’s future queue is chock full of promising titles such as the Chilean shocker Hidden in the Woods, the South Korean anthology film Horror Stories, and what appears to be Artsploitation’s only American release, the Elijah Wood-produced Toad Road. A cursory glance at Artsploitation’s website, http://www.artsploitationfilms.com/, shows that the company is one to keep an eye on in the horror world.
