Film Review
Production
Adventureland is an excellent coming of age film that bridges the seriousness of life with comedic undertones. It is not only nostalgic for the 1980s but reminiscent of how films of that era dealt with young adulthood and finding oneself. The movie is a delight as it has the quirky, the outrageous, the disillusioned and the painfully geeky characters all together for an experience one will not soon forget. Plus, it features the resurgence of the “mix tape” – how can you resist?
Acting
As an overall ensemble piece, the acting in Adventureland is excellent. Everyone evokes such different personalities in their characters and they all meld together on screen to give the viewer an enjoyable moviegoing experience. Whether they are making you laugh with their over the top antics at the Amusement Park or bringing tears to your eyes with their desire to be free of the chains that are their lives, everyone delivers performances that are genuine and honest and timed perfectly.
Score and Soundtrack
Looking for an awesome playlist of 1980s hits, and hidden treasures? Adventureland‘s soundtrack gives it to you in a large quantity. The best part of the soundtrack though is how perfectly it is synched to the action on screen. The songs reflect what is happening with a level of care and precision that is first rate.
Comedy Factor
Adventureland has comedy that is fresh and actually funny. It is not the gross-out humor you find in many young adult films but a mature, if not at times ridiculous, humor that anyone can appreciate and enjoy. You do need to pay attention and listen as many of the most comedic moments happen when you least expect them.
